Caipirinha

There are a few Brazilians in my Twitter stream who may take me to task for this recipe, but it has served me well in the past. Here’s another goody from Martha Stewart. Enjoy.

Caipirinha

The main ingredient in this cocktail, which is considered to be the national drink of Brazil, is cachaça, a potent sugarcane brandy. You can substitute light rum if you can’t find it.

Yield: 2 6-ounce drinks

4 limes, halved

2 ½ tablespoons superfine sugar

Coarsely crushed ice

4 ounces cachaça

Step 1: Place 2 lime halves in each of 2 tumblers. Sprinkle 2 teaspoons of the sugar into each tumbler. Using a wooden reamer, crush the flesh of the limes.

Step 2: Fill the glasses with the ice and add the cachaça. Stir well and serve.
